Art 1 Final Portfolio

1.    Which project was your favorite or most successful this semester? Please explain.
My landscape painting was my favorite piece of art that we did all semester. I really enjoyed being able to do whatever I wanted. I really learned a lot from this, like which way to hold your brush and how to move it to make it do what your wanted. In my opinion adding shades and values really added to my painting. I like that you can mix colors and make it exactly the way you want it to. And when you mess up, (which I did) you can just paint right over it and never know it was there. When we first started working on this with the iPads I wasn’t so sure how it would turn out, but in the end I really liked my end results. I wish that we had done more projects like this because I really enjoy painting. Painting really relaxes me because you don’t have to stress about it working perfectly.

2.    Regardless of whether you liked or disliked a project, which one did you learn, grow, or developed the most from? Please explain.
I felt like my skeleton was a huge learning experience. This was one of the first real projects that we did. And I really enjoyed figuring out how to make my skeleton for this mermaid. From this project I learned that you have to be realistic even though it may be a cartoon. You also have to make sure that the bones line up in proportion with the character. We learned how to do shading and making it look as if it were real. Because this was one of the first things we did, I did not know as much about art. But through this project I think that I became a better artist by paying attention to detail.
3.    Choose 1 piece of Art that you used skills and techniques learned from previous projects. Discuss your growth as an artist and how you incorporated these skills and techniques to create the piece.
I think that my clay tile used a lot of skills from previous projects. We learned how to create depth and values when we were forming our tiles. When we were painting the tile we used a lot of skills that we had just used in our landscape paintings. I think that using values and shades in painting 3D figures is important in making it look realistic. When doing the values I was able to do them well because we had practiced a lot when we did our value shapes on the iPads. With my elephant I had to use everything I learned to make sure that this was successful. I had to use the paint to bring my piece to life. I could not just leave it flat colors or else the tile may not have looked as realistic.
4.    Which project do you feel was the least important in learning the concepts taught in this course? Please explain.
I thought that the stencil project was useless. I didn’t think that we learned anything from these. I did not like how mine turned out at all. I don’t think that we used any new art skills to complete this because all we did was trace a picture, cut out a stencil and spray paint it. I wish that we had not spent so much time on this because I feel like we could have done a better project that would have helped to enhance our art abilities. We didn’t learn anything from this project other than to learn to cut with an exacto-knife and learn how to use Photoshop a little bit. This project should be taken out of the curriculum because not very many people enjoyed and it wastes time that you could be doing something to make yourself a better artist.
5.    Choose a piece or artwork where the subject matter reflects you as an artist. One that you have a personal connection to. Please explain your choice.
I think that my zebra print was a project that reflects me as an artist most. My prints were not perfect. You can see that there are lots of rough edges and spots were the ink is patchy. But I am nowhere near a prefect artist and I know that but I am learning. I had some rough edges that I could have fixed up to make it a little nicer but I am glad that I didn’t. The process of making this took me a lot more time than it should have because I messed up and had to start over. But then next time I started I learned how to fix the problem and to even make the picture better. This picture is not perfect and neither am I.
